The 36th Annual Contessa Awards

I can’t believe it’s already been a week and a half since the 36th Annual Contessa Awards. Congratulations once again to all the finalists and winners!
I also want to congratulate those who entered and didn’t make it through to the finals. In my eyes your all winners. You put yourself and your work out there knowing that your work is getting judged. It’s not easy to mentally prepare for. It’s takes a whole lot of strength and courage to put yourself and your work forward. For all those reasons and then some, I congratulate you all.

I know exactly how it feels. Yes, I’ve won a few but I’ve definitely lost a few too. In fact, my last collection didn’t make it to the semifinals. And yes, it can hurt but I took that pain and turned it into strength. It taught me a lot about my art and about who I am. I’m proud of that last collection and so I should be. I put hours upon hours on making those hair creations and learned more about my craft and dedication through that collection. So I won. I won for me and for my craftsmanship. That’s how I see it. Like I’ve mentioned before and on the Contessa stage, I’ve sat in many of those “seats”. I’ve also had the opportunity to be a Contessa judge in the past and that isn’t easy by any means. Looking through thousands of entries, collections on collections; you see the countless hours and dedication to make a vision come to life. Through the lense of a camera you capture the passion, creativity and love for your art. The beauty industry is created by inspiring individuals and I’m so proud to be apart of an industry who are the real life influencers, the trend setters and the motivators of our world.

I say all this to share my love for the beauty industry and how proud I was to be your host of the 2025 Contessa Awards. To host my peers and my friends was an absolute honour. I want to extend my gratitude to Salon Magazine the producers of the Contessa awards for all their hard work and dedication every year for giving the beauty community a platform to showcase the talent and creativity of our industry.

If there is anyone who is interested in entering the Contessa Awards and have never done it before, I’d say just do it! You never know who will be inspired by you and your art. The only person standing in your way is you. Standing in the way of your growth and in the way of your passion. Be inspired by those of us who once too entered in for the first time and didn’t win but kept entering to push our own boundaries. Winning is putting yourself out there for the world to know who you and for you to make a mark on the world.

Happy hair days ahead!

With Fall just around the corner I just wanted to check in with you all.
So, tell me how are you? But really how are you doing? I want to know. Most importantly what’s going on with your hair???? What’s holding you back from getting that new do? Yes, I know so many questions but at least I have the answer. GET BACK INTO TO THE SALON and please put down the scissors. Sorry to tell you, if you’re not a trained beauty professional you have no idea what you’re doing even if the TikTok video told you so.
I can’t get over how many amateur hairstylist videos I have come across over social media. I’m definitely one for a good hair tutorial, but from one professional to another. I know I’ve touched on this subject before and I’m only bringing it up again as it’s continuously being brought up to my attention on a daily. Either from walk-in clients needing help from a disastrous TikTok haircut or all over my social media pages.
I want to bring the importance of having an educated and talented hair artist working their magic on your hair and keeping the focus exactly that.
We, the beauty professionals don’t play with hair. Please don’t insult our intelligence by undermining our craftsmanship. The dedication, commitment and professionalism, we as beauty professionals uphold is by far the most impressive. Not only do we educate ourselves on new and up coming techniques but we also are mindful of people’s emotions. As we create beautiful hair art for our clients, we are also their friend, their therapist and sometimes the only people they may trust. We are their volts. The trust a person gives you to do their hair is a whole other level. This level of vulnerability allows them to feel comfortable to share what’s happening in their lives.
Some days it’s easier than others. And on those ”other” days we the beauty professionals are the ones that no
matter what may be going on in our own personal lives, we as empathic humans give that love and support our clients need.
We change lives and trust me when I tell you, we know how lucky we are to do so!
I don’t take for granted how fortune I am to give great hair and a leading ear.
You’re in great hands in so many ways!
I hope you read this with love. respect and compassion. And I hope it helps you find your way back into the salon again!

I dedicate this article to my local and loving clients. I am forever grateful for all your love, support and respect for my craftsmanship throughout the years. Here’s to many more happy hair days ahead at The Hair Spot Toronto!

Much love,
Palma N’Sheluvzit

Summer is wrapping up and I can’t believe I’m even saying that.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve shared my thoughts. There’s been so many things happening this summer. Brat summer was a thing and it wasn’t so “demure”. It came in hot and fast! With a blink of an eye, it’s back to school and omg Halloween decor in every store.
The hair world was bustling this summer. With baby lights and extreme transformations. From blonde to dark and long to short it was a creative season. Fall styles and trends are hitting the platforms and are painting the town red!!!! Are you daring enough for that transformation?
Let’s find out.
Red hair in all shades is the hot trend with cascading layers for the fall. And the bangs in every shape and form are thriving. From the wolf bang to the curtain bang, this trend has been hot for a few seasons and is becoming a signature staple for many.
The cooler weather is around the corner and we’re looking to warm things up with these rich and toasty tunes of red. From strawberry blonde to deep auburns and if you’re not daring to go red, give the caramel buttercream hair color, a try! And if that doesn’t curve your tastebuds, going back to the classic and your original Haircolour will give you that Demure look you’ve been crazing for this upcoming season.
All this favour in one season is giving spiced caramel lattes! Now that’s a new name for a hair colour!

I’m not sure who needs to hear this, but put the scissors down.

The social media platform is a blessing and a curse. We value it in so many ways but it can also be harmful. Let me get to the point, watch all the hair tutorial videos, but please do not try this at home! There should be warning labels on these videos. If it was that easy to cut hair then everyone would be doing it.
Cutting and colouring hair is a profession and it takes years of education and training to master the craft. We, hair professionals take pride in our work and yes, we will help those who were brave enough to make that mistake because we care.
I can appreciate those posting videos for entertainment purposes but not to encourage an amateur to pick up the kitchen scissors and attempt to cut their own hair. This only makes them think they’re about to have this beautiful haircut that will give them confidence and then BOOM, they are left with this feeling of disappointment and their confidence went out the window along with the hair. This is not what I encourage. Hair is so powerful, it’s your crown and is what can make or break how you feel on a daily basis. It’s a confidence booster!
It’s happened one to many times now that I’ve had emergency walkins at the salon begging for help. And of course my heart breaks for them and somehow in my crazy schedule I make it happen because there are no bad hair days here at The Hair Spot!
I’m grateful for all the training and expertise I have obtained throughout the years to be able to fix a bad cut.
So please I beg you, put the scissors down. Because for you they are just scissors in the kitchen drawer and for me my hair shears are what bring happiness to so many people for all the happy hair days ahead!

Much love,
Palma N’Sheluvzit

A new month, a new you!

We’re five months into 2024 and let me tell I’m working hard. Not just at the salon but also on myself. My mental health takes priority always. Finding ways to release any tension or even ways to express my happiness, always helps me to feel so much better. A good hard laugh helps to bring in good energy and even a deep cry will help to release any bad vibes.
I love to workout. Yup, can you believe it; I can’t sometimes. Hahaha but for real, I absolutely love working out, it truly brings me joy. Seeing how I can lift a weight I never thought I could or ride my bike at distances I could never imagine brings me so much respect for how powerful our bodies are. But what’s more impressive is the power of our minds and how we control what say to ourselves that can either be encouraging or harmful. So be careful how you speak to yourself. You’re your number one cheerleader and only you can stop yourself from achieving your goals. I know it’s easier said than done. But trust me when I tell you that your mind is a powerful tool. The more you feed that tool positive energy and confident thoughts, the more positive possibilities will come your way. Yes, it’s the law of attraction. It’s real!!!
I’m not saying that if you believe and say to yourself that your black box dried hair can be blonde in one seating. Because I hope by now you know that it can’t happen over night. But, if that’s your goal then yes, believe it can happen with the correct time and patience. What is meant to be for you will never pass you by, even with your hair. 💇‍♀️
Let’s keep focused on what brings us joy and happiness and the rest will fall into place. Keep positive thoughts in the front of your mind and always lead with love ❤️.

Happy Hair days ahead!

To Bang or not to bang?
That’s the million dollar question. It’s the most common question I get at the salon. And my answer most of the time is NO!
And why I say no, is because it’s all up the individual who is wearing them. Maintenance, upkeep and the sheer fact that maybe they don’t suit your face shape or your lifestyle. It’s work! Not everyone was born with hair that you can just wake up and your bangs are prefect. I’m not saying you can’t have them; I’m just saying be prepared and informed about what to expect when you have bangs.
If you have the patience to style your bangs and have the prefect face shape for them, than let’s get banging.
All jokes aside, it’s a classic look and can be a signature look for you. From curtain bangs to micro bangs the look is always current. Your stylist is always happy to help to determine what shape and style your bags should be for your face shape. That’s what I love about bangs. They are tailored cut to fit your face shape.
Why are we always contemplating getting bangs? It’s simply because it is an iconic look. Who doesn’t want to be iconic? The bang is a vibe and it’s giving boldness and confidence.
Looking for the change and thinking the bang is the way to go? Book your next hair appointment and ask all the questions about the upkeep and how to keep them looking fresh. Be sure to know your stylist will lead you in the right direction and only do it if you are 100% sure it’s what you want. Growing them out is a whole other conversation. But we’ll get to that another day.
Happy Hair days ahead!

Spring into something new!

It’s that time of year where change is upon us. The change of seasons always brings in clients looking for a fresh new look.
I love change. It’s an opportunity to reinvent yourself. Begin a new chapter in your journey and turn a fresh page on life. Change can bring on so many wonderful new adventures and it may start with your hair. Your hair is an impress of who you are and changing your look can set off a new you, you haven’t seen before.
All I’m saying is, don’t be afraid to change. Ok I get it; change can be scary for many. So then let’s call it, “let’s do something new.”
I think that phrase sounds more positive and doesn’t trigger areas of our lives that once change wasn’t a choice but a need to survive.
So let’s do something new. What’s the vibe? Feeling soft and light, looking for depth and warmth or something more edgy and deep?
No matter what it maybe think about this opportunity as a moment to bring in the new just as the trees and plants begin to bloom so can you!
If you’re not sure where to start, book a consultation with your stylist and bring with you ideas of what you wish to achieve. Pictures are a great tool to show your stylist what it is you look and wish to have. And your stylist will be able to guide you in the right direction. The consultation is the key factor to make this “something new” experience that much more enjoyable.
As the rain comes down heavy in my city today, it’s makes me feel like the old is washing away to bring in the new!
Looking forward to your “something new” at your next visit at The Hair Spot Toronto!

This one’s a throw back.

Sharing my hair love on national television was an absolute pleasure and honour. As a beauty expert on Cityline for three years, I was able to be apart of some incredible makeovers and share some of my favourite beauty tips.
One very important one is how to use and control heat on your hair hot tools.
Some hair hot tools heat up hotter than your kitchen oven. To understand what temperature you need for your hair and the importance to keeping it healthy. Here are a few tips to help you keeping your hair happy and healthy.
Let’s start off with damaged hair. If your ends are “fried”, I would highly recommend to keep any hot tool off your hair. If you’re in desperate need to use a hot tool to help control the hair, then you must lower the temperature on your tool. For instance, if you have a burnt potato, you wouldn’t slather it up with oil and put it back in the oven? The answer is NO! (Just in case anyone was wondering.) Same goes for your hair. If your hair is at that level of damage, I highly recommend for you to see your hairdresser as soon as possible. Your hair needs “medical” attention.

For fine hair texture, I recommend you use your hot tool at a temperature no higher that 350°F.
For medium hair texture, I’d recommend a temperature no higher than 390°F.
And course hair texture, the temperature on your hot tool should be no higher than 410°F.

Most hot tools do heat up to 450°F, this was designed for in salon use for hairdressers who are trained to work through the hair without creating damage. Also, at that temperature, especially flat irons that were designed to heat up to 450°F it was intended for hair salon use when applying keratin hair straightening treatments.

Always use a thermal protection product on your hair before any hot tool is applied to your hair. This will most definitely help to avoid any damage from any hair tool.

Looking for more information on how to use your hot tools, feel free to reach out to me and I’d be happy to walk you through the steps.

The Palma N’Sheluvzit Luxe Sublime Hair Straightener was created for you and inspired by you. This hair hot tool is designed with nano titanium ceramic plates with bevelled edges. With that design in mind, it will help you to straighten your hair as well as create wonderful waves and voluminous curls. And my favourite part is, the auto shut off for peace of mind! YES!!!! Gone are the days of worrying if you’ve unplugged your hair straightener.
The Palma N’Sheluvzit Luxe Sublime Hair straightener is available for sale at The Hair Spot Toronto.

Let’s keep your hair healthy with many more happy hair days ahead.

Reviews and how they make an impacted.

I am forever grateful for a 5 star review. What it does for a business has an impact larger than one can imagine.
Bad reviews will also do the same of course. However, sometimes bad reviews will intrigue one’s curiosity and also help to bring a new client into the salon and see for themselves.
My point is, any review is a good review!

I’m a “small business” but I’m not small at all. Maybe in my height but don’t underestimate a 5 foot 2 inch woman. Running a business is so rewarding and providing a service that makes such a positive impact in someone’s life is truly a gift I’m forever grateful to give.

Not sure what your definition is of a “small business”, but nothing I do is small. I do it all with passion or I don’t do it at all. There is not one service that I provide that is small. When you come to The Hair Spot Toronto you never feel small and you will always be heard. I think you get my point! “Period” 🤩
The Hair Spot Toronto is giving extra large personality and vibrate energy all day long!

My sincerest gratitude to all my wonderful clients who have taken their time to write me reviews. I appreciate you all and I’m forever grateful for all the hair love ❤️.

For those of you who would like to write a review I’d greatly appreciate your time to do so.

What’s trending?
A popular question I get asked. And my answer is and will always be what suits you, your head shape, face shape, and your lifestyle. It all depends on your upkeep, wellness to style and the want to stay on point.
These all questions I run by you in our consultation. It’s so point for me to understand what you want and what you’re willing to do on a day to day bases.
You are your own trend. It’s unique just for you. And I love that for you!
Now, if bangs are in style and you happen to rock bangs because your face shape suits it, then you’ve fallen in the “trend” for the season.
Just like fashion trends, hair also makes a come back. Look at the good old mullet. It’s come back and it has made its mark in the fashion world. Love it or hard it, if you can rock a modern day mullet you’re making a statement.
How about the classic bob? We all love a good bob once in a while and again depending on your head shape and face shape this might just be your forever trend. Look at the most recognizable fashion icon Anna Wintour, who not only changed the fashion industry but has kept the bob hair style as her signature look.
Which brings me to my next point. If Anna Wintour, who is praised for her skill in identifying emerging fashion trends has kept up her classic bob for decades then I believe it’s safe to say, find your own trend.
You have the ability to create your own style and be apart of a trend that is not just for a season but is what makes you, YOU!

The consultation
My favourite part. It’s where we get to know each other and what your expectations are for your hair. Sometimes the consultation takes longer than the service. And sometimes the service you get isn’t what you happily expected.

It’s your first time in my salon and maybe you’re a bit nervous, anxious or maybe that’s just excitement. I’m here to ease your nerves or to carry on the excitement with a new hair experience. This is where the magic happens, at The Hair Spot!
It’s a one on one experience from the moment you are greeted at door to all your hair dreams that you’ll adore! Yup, I see what I did there. lol
This is where we sit and chat a bit. And while I ask you a few questions I’m listening and at the same time I’m looking at your face shape, facial expressions and even you body language. This all helps me to determine how far to push the envelope or even how to keep it easy and simple.
One thing I will never do is disrespect another hairstylist no matter how bad your hair may be. It’s what I call respect for my peers in the industry. I’m not here to gossip during the consultation but more importantly I’m here to understand why you’re here now. Why you left that salon? What did your stylist do to your hair? Do you have reference photos of yourself or what your expectations are?
I want to know it all! The good, the bad and the ugly. My goal is to make it better and make you happy!

I grow up in the hair salon and I watched my father cut and style hair with such attention and passion. It’s all in the details. And that’s what I strive to do. It’s called listening and paying attention to what your hopes and desires are for your hair. The magic is all in the details!

Now let’s start with your hair!

Why, hair extensions?

That’s a loaded question!
The list for the reasons why is endless but let me share just a few.
Extreme hair loss, can happen from trauma in your life or even weight loss and it doesn’t always grow back.
We can get into the technical reasons why but to make the very long story short, hair extensions are a great solution. Especially keratin bond Great Lengths extensions. Your hair is made of keratin so the application of keratin bonds is going to be the safest and most effective way to give you full and voluminous hair.
Not only will you have fabulous hair but the confidence that comes along with it is truly a gift.
Which leads me to my next reason why!
Positive Self-esteem, confidence, and self-love! That’s right it’s the month of love and what better way to celebrate than to love yourself. Sometimes it’s not always easy, maybe we’re still dealing with a few pounds we gained from over the holidays and it’s making us feel a bit less confident or maybe your not happy with your hair colour and are looking for a change. Well, you guessed it hair extensions not only give you the length you may desire but also the feeling of being attractive. Yes, it’s safe for you to feel attractive and dare I say, sexy!!!! Feel yourself in every positive way. When you feel confident you attract positive energy into your life! Your hair is can definitely give you the confidence you need to tackle those few pounds, or start your new job and even walk up to that person you like to ask them out. Yes, the power of hair! That’s self love ❤️.
So let’s BOND over your hair extensions at your next appointment or contact to book your free consultation.

Love is in the HAIR!

It’s the beginning of the month of love ❤️.
Let’s not get to mushy about it and get straight to the point! Let’s cuddle first…
Love your hair! Show your hair some love!
Brush it, comb it but please don’t tease it. 😉
Shampoo it, and definitely condition it. Don’t be ruff with it especially when it’s wet. Always start to comb it from the bottom up.

We have all heard these tips before but I’m not here today to give you more hair tricks. I’m here to tell you to love your hair!!! Love it for what it is! If it’s thin, love it! If it’s thick and course, love it! Light hair or dark, love it! No matter the texture or even if you have none of it, (love the bald look too) be proud of it…It’s your CROWN!

From the moment you walk into any room, it is the first thing everyone sees. It’s a statement of who you are. Think about your hair and what it says to you. Are you bold? Are you conservative? Or are you fashion forward? For me it depends on my vibe for that season or even the decade. For those of you who know me, you know my hair phases. And I loved them all. All were who I was and what I wanted to share with the world. Every style, even when I shaved the sides bold, gave me confidence and allowed me to be who I am…a strong women!
From the tip of your head right down to your toes, your hair says it all! Straighten that crown and wear it proud!

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

It may sound deep but really it’s not. After many years of being the educator, I’ve become the student. I’m just shy of 25 years of being apart of the beauty industry and I’m always striving to build my portfolio of hair knowledge.
I’ve worked for many years with hair extensions in many different ways and with many different techniques; In my Avant Garde hair collections and on clients.
This one particular way always had my curiosity, and I’m not exactly sure why I didn’t do it sooner. In that moment, I reminded myself that, the minute you feel uncomfortable is the moment you begin to grow.
So I asked myself, When was the last time I did something for the first time? This past weekend was the first time I learned something new and became CERTIFIED with Great Lengths bond Hair Extensions. My teacher Judith even told me that I’m “very advanced”, what a compliment! I mean, I always say and do everything with passion or I don’t do it at all!
I’m so grateful I followed my heart and had this experience and I can’t wait to transform my clients with this glamour technique! Hair extensions were once something people would lie about if they had them but now we all want them even if don’t need them. Who am I kidding? We all want them! Hair extensions are more than just for the exterior appearance, they also bring so much joy to many who have hair loss or have experienced damaged hair or dare I say, have had a really bad hair cut.
I’m so thrilled to be able to bring this refined technique to my salon and offer a service unlike no other. Yes, who’s ready?! I am!
Feel free to contact me to discuss your hair extension needs!

To Shampoo or not to shampoo, that is the question!

The question I get asked the most is, “how often should I shampoo my hair?”

Let’s get right to it, you should shampoo and condition your hair once or twice a week. Of course that depends on what’s going on in your daily life. But to keep it on a more general answer once or twice a week is where it’s at.

If you have coloured, highlight or any chemical treatment on your hair then shampooing once or twice a week allows your hair to stay clean and reduces as any damage from over shampooing. Let me be clear, shampooing is not damaging to your hair. It’s the movement of scrubbing your scalp and hair while wet that can cause damage. So please be gentle, your hair will thank you!

For those of you who wish to shampoo more often because you feel your hair is oily, shampooing your hair less often will actually help to reduce the oil build up.
Your hair is a membrane, so if you teach your hair and scalp that it will not get shampooed as often as your used too, your hair will remember (believe it or not) and will produce less oil. You’ll thank me trust me! I know it sounds out of this world but there is a scientific explanation behind this magical oily hair trick.

Please don’t forget to condition your hair. YOUR HAIR! Yes, I said it loudly! I wanted your to hear me. lol
After you shampoo your hair and scalp and then rinse, you must ALWAYS condition your hair and only your hair. Your scalp does not need conditioning. This will allow your natural oils to do their job and the conditioner is there to protect your mid shaft and ends. Don’t forget to rinse the conditioner out with cool water. This will also help to reduce an oil build up on your scalp and hair.

New Year, Better Hair!

Happy New Year!
Hope everyone has had a great start. Let’s get right into better hair for the new year with a few tips and tricks to help kick off those good hair resolutions for 2024.

It’s that time of year (if you live in a colder climate) where your hair can be dry, brittle, and even static. One word for you, hydrate!
I know you’ve heard it before drink water, but for real, it really does help!
Just as we moisturize our skin after we shower, apply lipgloss on our dry lips, we must also condition our hair.
Here are a few tips and tricks to help keep your hair, feeling and looking its best throughout 2024.

First, use a shampoo and conditioner for moisturizing or hydrating hair.
Please whatever you do, DO NOT purchase a two in one shampoo and conditioner that is an absolute nightmare for your hair, I said what I said!
A shampoo and a conditioner is absolutely necessary as they both do two different and important aspects to keeping your hair moisturized and hydrated throughout the season.
Conditioning your hair is the key to helping your hair stay healthy and feeling it’s best.
This will help to lock and load that moisture in your hair. If you shampoo your hair in the shower, once you rinse and then you apply conditioner. Leave the conditioner in, step out of the shower and flip your head into the sink and rinse the conditioner with cool water. (not sure you can handle a cold shower, but if you can go for it, highly recommend it not only for your hair but your skin too) leave about 10% of the conditioner in your hair, so a fast and cool rinse will do the trick. The cold water helps to seal the cuticles, allowing the hair to soak up all the moisture, keeping the hair protected and looking and feeling healthy.

Use a microfibre towel to blot the access water out of your hair.
Before using any hot tools, including the blow dryer, always apply a hot tool protective product. If you are unsure of what to use, feel free to contact me as I have a few suggestions of my sleeves.

After you finish styling your hair, use a light serum to help keep your hair moisturized and hydrated throughout the day.

This last tip is no trick! This beauty ritual is one that is dated from way back when.
A silk or satin pillowcase to sleep on at night or a scarf. The natural fibres will help keep the moisture in and that static off your hair!

Cheers to a great start to 2024 wishing you all happy hair days ahead!
